Social Event for the non-driver?

Hi-

If any of you are like me, then the whole "I love to do anything, anytime, with my Porsche" mentality is VERY one-sided in your relationship. (With your sig other, not the car).

The mere mention of getting up at 5AM to drive to Squamish just so we can turn around and come back evinces a look of complete bewilderment from the better half.

That being said, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in attending a strictly "no driving required" event that would be in a more "normal" social environment?

Specifically, do you think that there would be interest in a PCA-CWR drinks/dinner gettogether?

It just so happens that my brother-in-law owns a restaurant in Yaletown (called Brix, at 1138 Homer), and they are about to open a new lounge beneath it, called George, that opens onto Hamilton. (FYI, Brix was used as the set for one of Porsche's Boxster TV commercials).

I was thinking that we could all meet at George for drinks/appies, and then those of us that are interested could adjourn upstairs for a nice meal.

The prices are VERY reasonable, and if you like, David has assured me that we could have our own set menu for the event, if we desire.

I was thinking that we could do this sometime in the next 4-6 weeks, and if it goes well enough, it might be fun to do it on a monthly basis, so that the non-addicts can enjoy each other's company, etc.

Pics of the restaurant (and it's award winning, fully enclosed English style courtyard) are here if you're interested. There's also a menu online as well.

My wife (Liz) has already given the big "two thumbs up" to the thought, as she'd like to meet "those people" that I spend so much time with, without having to sit at an autocross event for a few hours.

Thoughts?

Jeff,

As you know I work next door to Brix. I've been in Yaletown for over 6 years that this is one of the best know secrets in the area.

I would love to have an evening out with other members at Brix, If I'm in town I'll sure to attend.

Jeff,

I think this idea could be a winner! I'm certainly game and think it is worth a try. Getting SO's involved makes life easier when you want to do those things that they don't care for. We can talk and look over our calender for a good date to try this.

Agreed … I think it is very helpful to find more opportunities for SOs to participate in club events … lets them know that we aren't a lot of neanderthal wrench twisters with grease under our fingernails.

I was at a social function at Brix restaurant a few months ago and they did a nice job … had a Formula Ford race car sitting in the foyer that belonged to one of the owners of the company putting on the event.

Hey there-

FYI, I just got off the phone with my B-I-L, and they're opening George (the new bar) a week from Monday, so I'm thinking that I might just go ahead and pick a mid-week date about 5 weeks out to tentatively schedule the event.

After all, trying to get everyone to agree on a date would be pretty dificult, I'd say.

What I might like to do, though, is get enough confirmed attendance so that we might be able to get the place reserved for us for an hour or so from 6pm to 7pm (or something similar) to have a "private reception", after which we could head upstairs to have dinner.

I'll put up a registration form in the next couple of weeks with dates, etc., so be on the lookout. This will provide us with names, dinner plans, etc.

I'm going to start to set it up for about 5-6 weeks from now… that'll give me time to recover from some vacation time I've got coming up, and will give Dave (the brother-in-law) a chance to figure out the dynamics of the new bar, so he can close it down for a couple of hours exclusively for us.

I'll keep you posted as I get new information.

FYI, due to the potential size of the event, I'm going to just pick a date and hope people can work with it… trying to organize a date amongst lots of people could be tricky.

Also, just giving you some warning that I'm going to require some pretty solid RSVP's so that he doesn't reserve the place for us and nobody shows…

More info as this progresses.
