For more than four decades, the Porsche 911 has been deemed
an automotive icon and the epitome of the sports car. That means that the
launch of the new Type 991 is an important event for the Porsche Museum
Stuttgart as well. As a curtain raiser for 2012, the new generation is being
welcomed as part of a major special exhibition from 31 January to 20 May, 2012
under the banner “911 Identity”.

More than 700,000 911s have been produced in
Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen since it was unveiled in 1963. The recipe for its
success is its uniqueness, because the 911 combines apparent contradictions
such as sportiness and everyday practicality, tradition and innovation,
exclusivity and social acceptance or design and functionality like no other
car. No wonder that each of the now seven 911 generations has written its own
success story. As a result, the Porsche Museum is exhibiting all the 911
generations, from the “original 911” to the new Type 991 – against the backdrop
of the prevailing mood of the relevant decade or year in which the sports car
icon came to market.

Rare motor racing variants such as the Porsche 911 Carrera
RS 2.7 “Safari” or Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid will also be on show. In addition,
to unique technical exhibits and cutaway models from Weissach, the visitor will
also get to see one of the new 911 generation “Erlkings”, before being able to
slide behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 Carrera at the end of the special
exhibition. The special exhibition also showcases steering wheels and wheel
rims from 1963 to the present day. Finally, the automotive retrospective is
rounded off by documents from the company archive that have never previously
been on public display.

Special Offers for Visitors

As part of the “911 Identity” special exhibition, the
Porsche Museum is also expanding its guided tour offering. 911 fans can brush
up their knowledge of the sports car icon during an one hour themed guided tour
– after first registering with the visitor service using the e-mail address
info.museum@porsche.de.

For a rich kid kicked out of design school, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche created one of the greatest legacies in automotive design with the Porsche 911 — one that will survive far beyond Porsche’s death today at the age of 76.

The son of company founder Ferry Porsche, F.A. or “Butzi” as he was known spent most of his career at his eponymous firm Porsche Design, where he oversaw the styling of thousands of products from watches to yachts, many with the tag “Designed by F.A. Porsche.”

But it’s the 911′s emergence in 1964, when Butzi Porsche was just 25 years old, that made him a historic figure. While his father and grandfather had been famous German engineers — the original Ferdinand Porsche engineered the first Volkswagen Beetle — F.A. Porsche chose to study design. A year after enrolling in a prestigious school, Porsche was in his own words “kicked out,” and took at job at his father’s fledging car business in 1957.

At the time, Ferry Porsche had created the successful Porsche 356, but needed a follow-up model. He set the car’s basic layout —a rear engine, a short wheelbase for agile handing — but pushed the designers and engineers to fashion a more sporting look than the men who built the Beetle had produced so far.

Prowling the auto shows of Europe, F.A. Porsche formed an idea of how the car should look as a smooth, curving fastback, rejecting the flat angles popular in American cars of the era. “I just think you start creating edges when the body of a car is bad…they are lines that support something that ties the designer down,” Porsche would say years later.

The new car’s design spurred a dispute with the older designers in Ferry Porsche’s shop, to such a degree Ferry went around them, taking his son’s blueprints to the body fabricator. The first production-ready model, called the 901, appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1964, and after Peugeot objected to the name, Porsche changed it to 911. Despite the timelessness of the 911′s shape, F.A. Porsche believed his greatest design came a few years later, with the Porsche 904 race car.

When the company went public in 1971, the Porsche family withdrew from management roles — although F.A. Porsche would remain a presence on the company’s board and in its design studios. “He established a design culture in our company that has shaped our sports cars to this very day,” said Matthias Müller, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG. “His philosophy of good design is a legacy to us that we will honor for all time.”

Porsche is ready to realese smaller sport-utility vehicle in the lineup, known as the Macan — initially called the Cajun. Though word on the street suggests that the Macan will offer a small displacement 2.0-liter akin to the Audi Q5, the latest news hitting the wires is saying that the Macan will benefit from a properly sporting twin-turbo set up.
If it didn’t feature a turbo model, it wouldn’t be a proper Porsche, would it?
That being said, early rumors say it will feature a 370 plus horsepower six cylinder that will also churn out around 400 lb.-ft. of torque.
Assuming that the Macan will integrate lessons learned from the big-boy Cayenne SUV, it certainly looks like the Macan will be most sporting SUV out of the entry-level premium class.

Sports-car brands have spent decades gilding perceptions of their vehicles as hyper-exciting transports to fantasy fulfillment, as heedlessly expensive toys whose only important attributes were horsepower, torque and maybe coefficient of drag. But in a new marketing campaign for its slow-selling 911, Porsche seeks to turn that elitist notion upside down – or at least a bit cockeyed.

The company has begun advertising the 911 as, of all things, a practical vehicle that can serve as a good-looking way to get around in the workaday world and even, in some cases, can demonstrate the same capabilities as a minivan. In its “Engineered for Magic. Everyday” campaign, Porsche highlights 911 owners using the car for a series of mundane activities including hauling groceries and picking up kids from school.
